Quadruple F1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel has been voted sportsman of the year by European news agencies, and his peers give credit to his talent.

Organised by the Polish news agency PAP, 21 European outlets cast their votes and the Red Bull driver emerged with more points than tennis’ Rafael Nadal, and British athlete Mo Farah.

Vettel’s latest victory is despite widespread claims that the German is only dominating Formula 1 because of Adrian Newey’s design genius.

But rival Felipe Massa told Brazil’s Totalrace: “[Vettel's dominance] is because of his talent, no doubt. He is an excellent driver who deserves everything he has achieved.

“Many people say he wins only because he has the best car. He does [have the best car], but the work he has done is amazing and if he continues to have a competitive car, he will win more,” added Massa.

Vettel’s new status as arguably Formula 1′s very best driver is also supported by his traditional ally and friend Bernie Ecclestone.

The 26-year-old driver’s popularity, however, is another matter, particularly after he was repeatedly booed on post-race podiums in 2013.

“He created this reputation himself when he went ahead of Mark Webber in Malaysia,” Formula 1′s chief executive told Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Now some see him as a person that really he is not. But I don’t think he did anything wrong to Mark.”

Vettel has committed his medium-term future to Red Bull, but Ecclestone thinks the German will eventually move elsewhere.

“He is young and he won’t stay for forever where he is,” the 83-year-old Briton said.

“The problem is that all the drivers want to finish their careers at Ferrari, which isn’t good,” Ecclestone argued. “I think he should go to the team that can help him win more titles, and that will not necessarily be Ferrari.” (GMM)

Sebastien Loeb got nine on a trot mate, that’s what I call a champion, keep up the good work by then ;)

  • O’Ferrari

    What about maldonado?

  • MAD EEVE

    Multi-21 seb, Multi-21

  • Tinto

Multi 21 was the best fight of this year and RB pair was the only F1 pair that was really racing against each other.

Isn’t this the spirit of racing?

  • Tamburello_1994

Beating a dead horse at this point.

Multi 21 is so last year.

  • Tinto

That is true… Just read Multi 21 was voted the best pass of the year.

  • Boycotthehaters

Too bad the infantile “F1 fans” don’t know that Multi 21 was an attempt to gift Webber a race win which he could not earn on his own ability.

Yeah, “Multi 21″, loser. Learn what it actually means.

Cant ever see Seb Vettel wanting to be given a win or give one away.

    A Proper Racer!

    @ghog

    Ugh, really?

A proper racer? He was complaining to his team in the radio “Get Mark out of the way.”

Then webber, who was conserving tyres, took off and put a six second gap between he and fingerboy.

Seb waited until webber turned his engine down and took the win because he couldn’t keep up, that day.

I was pissed at webber. He should’ve put up more fight. Turned his engine up for the straight….

Clever Seb….. he was only 7 points ahead of webber at the time. If webber had won, they would’ve been equal leaders in the c/ship. It demoralized mark and seb reasserted his dominance….

Seb is a douche, but he is a clever douche.

I always wanted Mark Webber to earn a world championship, but the first driver to have to beat is your team mate.

    True statement

  • WestMclarenMercedes

Sportsman of the year? So did he also win it in 2012 when he was crying when he could not even pass the HRT of Narain Karthikeyan and on top of all giving him the bird on live tv(I know mark did it too it was justified for 3yrs of bs) then spain and italy. Who picks the winners? Red bull? I agree Loeb would have it on my book
