Mexican Sergio Perez will race for Force India next season, the British-based Formula 1 team announced on Thursday.

Perez joins the Vijay Mallya-run outfit after being replaced at under-performing McLaren by Danish rookie Kevin Magnussen, 21.

The 23-year-old will team up with Germany’s Nico Hulkenberg, who competed for Swiss-based Sauber this year, in an all-new lineup that leaves Britain’s Paul di Resta and Germany’s Adrian Sutil seeking new employers.

“He brings a healthy mix of youth and experience, and I’ve been very impressed with his recent performances,” Mallya said of Perez in a statement.

“He already has several podium finishes to his name, and being chosen by McLaren last year was a clear indication that he is a driver to watch for the future. We also recognise Sergio’s incredible talent and we are proud to have him in our team. He clearly has great speed and plenty of fire in his belly.”

Sutil is expected to move to Sauber while Di Resta’s best bet could be the IndyCar series in America, where his cousin Dario Franchitti has just retired after winning the Indy 500 three times.

Mercedes-powered Force India finished sixth overall in the constructors’ standings this year.

“Coming here was always my first choice and I’m really happy everything has now been confirmed,” Perez said.

“This is a young team with a lot of determination and they’ve produced competitive cars for the last few years. It’s all change for next season with the new regulations, but I already have a good feeling about 2014.” (Reuters)

I think Vijay Mallya and the shareholders are still sound as they have shown that the funds for the team are in place and they also reportedly paid Nico money owed and an advanced payment on this years wage. I would not write SFI off at this time.

  • captain tortuga

I hope they announce VdGarde, and that they do very well! would also be nice to see vdGarde next to Hulkenberg.. that’s something for a true measure of his abilities!

  • Darren

I would pick Hulk just over Di Resta but none of the pay drivers come close to Di Resta. This year the team cost him some good results and it looks like his career in F1 which is a shame because I think he is better than the car he has had.

Whomever task it is to inform Sutil his services are no longer required would be wise to have armed escorts assist with that endeavor – Just in case.

  • Jack

Yeah definitely do not want to break that news to Sutil…

  • Westmclarenmercedes

Its Sergio who will be at SFI not van der garde. Better line up than mclaren have. Nico & sergio both manage their tyres better than some others (crashtor)

  • Mercedes supporter forever

They have already confirmed Sergio Perez for SFI..

  • The Pessimist

Van Der Garde? a bullshit driver with a bucket load of cash…end of story.

  • Darius

Head high Resti, don’t worry the Force have lost out on this one.
They’ll come a calling back for you, in the meantime you spread those wings boy!
Remember what I told you! Spread those big wings of yours, just fly!

This article has changed but they have not taken the comments off, when @captain tortuga and I commented it was SFI to announce Nico Hulkenberg’s team mate.

  • Butterfly

Well, it was a multi-year deal at McLaren, wasn’t it?

  • Badman Jose

This rookie Magnussen had better have real speed and driver skills. McLaren, Methinks made a very bad move…Choosing a unproven Rookie over a real known performer, time will tell.

The Force now has a very good driver pairing with a little luck
they may beat the McLaren’s ..

    @Butterfly: So true!

  • Ninjamonk

I had to laugh that Force India said it was nothing to do with money that they signed Sergio Pérez. If this is true then maybe they should donate that rumoured 10 million that came with him to charity ;)

I am still not sold on him and his ability to be consistent. Anyone that thinks Force India have a better line up than McLaren is dreaming. Magnussen can’t do any worse than Sergio and its nice to see a driver getting a chance because of talent not mega backing. Time will tell. I think McLaren should of signed Hulk over Sergio in the first place.

  • MAD EEVE

    @Ninjamonk lol better than maldanado.

  • O’Ferrari

Well, di resta won’t be missed.

Tamburello_1994- pressure’s off no escort needed now sutil got the sauber job.
