Heikki Kovalainen got a break with Lotus

Heikki Kovalainen has admitted that he will have to prove thathe has upped his game to a potential 2014 Formula 1 employer.

After a season on the sidelines, the Finn was in a good position to return to the grid next year with Caterham.

He then jumped at the chance to replace the surgery-bound Kimi Raikkonen for the last two grands prix of 2013 at Lotus, but struggled to adapt to the black and gold car.

Kovalainen admits that his pointless outings in Austin and Brazil did not help his cause.

“At first I was not racing at all, and then when I finally did, I did not do well,” he is quoted by Finland’s Turun Sanomat newspaper.

“All in all, this was a bad year,” Kovalainen admitted.

He insists that he doesn’t regret accepting the call from Lotus, however.

“It was a great opportunity,” said the 32-year-old. “The car was really good, but I just couldn’t fully take advantage of it at any point.

“It was much more difficult than I could have imagined in advance.

“I don’t understand how I could make so many mistakes,” said Kovalainen. “Maybe it was the lack of the routine, or the long break from racing.”

Although many have urged him to call time on his Formula 1 career now, he insisted that he will not give up.

However, “If anyone wants me, I will have to be much, much more ready for race driving,” Kovalainen acknowledged. (GMM)

Good luck with that Heikki. You’re done in F1.

rarely you get a second chance in F1 let alone a third one…you needed to do a Mika Salo Ferrari German GP 1999 job…

  • matthew

    He was a huge disappointment.

  • drift

He was on his way to a top ten finish in his very first race for Lotus if not for an extra pit stop that wasn’t his fault.
Drove the 7th fastest overall race lap after finishing 8th in Qualifying and 5th in FP’s (4th in Brazil).

Among others. This can hardly be described as a huge disappointment.

Splat, cheqflag, matthew & co, do your homework before you make such superficial & negative comments!

drift..I’m not saying he is a bad driver or a disappointment..He is a talented fast driver but on this ocassion he really needed to showcase his talents to other teams for next year and produce a extraordinary result..there is no doubt he is fast but his decision to take the Lotus drive with no testing of the car was risky for his career..with no testing he could not take the car to its limits..If he didnt take the car he could not showcase anything so it was a hard choice for him to make..I understand your point with the pitstop but that car is a top 6 car everyday of the week..should have been up there !

Heikki you are a real nice guy but you need to look for something else, it is time to call it a day in F1 sorry.

  • matthew

@drift homework? Why are you defending a 7th fastest lap? Thats not good enough, and his result proves it. Yes it can easily be described as a huge disappointment.
