Ecclestone to give evidence at bribery trial
2 October, 2011
Oct.2 (PVM) Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone will be a witness at the trial of German banker Gerhard Gribkowsky, charged with receiving a $44-million bribe, in connection with the sale of Formula 1 to CVC.
The Independent quotes Ecclestone, “I had a contract with BLB so they couldn’t have fired me. [CVC] bought the contract so they had to take me as well. I’m going to be a witness in the trial. I have been to Munich and was questioned so I suppose they want to ask me the questions that I answered then. It’s what would normally happen in a court. [F1's chief legal officer] Sacha Woodward-Hill has got to go too.”
Gribkowsky, who has been in jail since January, is expected to deny Ecclestone’s claim that the money changed hands so that he kept quiet about the F1 supremo’s tax affairs.
